“Everybody dies but not everybody lives”….Throughout my 35 years of this thing called life I’ve achieved many things and have definitely had a good time along the way. From hoopin’ on the block as a kid back in Brightmoor to becoming a man and starting my own family it’s been quite a journey so far. Riding shotgun throughout has been the sound of Hip-Hop music which has not only served as motivation but also captured unforgettable memories that I am reminded of whenever I hear a certain track. From that moment I walked into the gas station on the corner of Dexter and Davidson and purchased my first hip-hop cassette (Run DMC “Raising Hell), hip-hop has been a huge part of my life. I often think back to the early days of beat-boxing contests on the playground during lunch or writing raps to impress the girls in class. Who remembers watching the “BOX” 24-7/365? Seeing the same videos played 6 times an hour but you didn’t even care, you’d sit there and watch like it was the first time it came on. These stories are shared in variation by my generation that came up in the inner-city during the 80′s and 90′s. And leading up to my days of meetings with Record Execs and Artist Listening Parties, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience the hip-hop culture on all levels which is truly a beautiful thing. Though corporate America has pulled me away from it somewhat, I’m still true to the game and will always represent for it. To help enhance some of the memories throughout my 35 years of Life, I’ve blended together some my all time favorite tracks along with some of the most notable hip-hop classics throughout the time frame of my youth until now. The playlist of May 7th: 35 years of Hip-Hop is inspired by my 35 years of growing from a young boy to a man and every stage in between. Shout-out to my homie DJ Dommystyles for jumping on the 1′s and 2′s to put it together, and a XL Shout-out to everybody for downloading and sharing. Let’s GO!

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre brought Tupac Shakur back from the dead for a showstopping finale to the first Coachella weekend on Sunday night.

Shakur appeared as a hologram on the festival stage after a tribute performance of his hit California Love and the late star ‘teamed up’ with Snoop on Ain’t Nothin’ Like A Gangsta Party after an eerie solo rendition of Hail Mary from beyond the grave.

The ghostly apparition drew mixed reactions from those watching the set online, with one fan calling it “wrong on so many levels” and others stunned by the Tupac trick, tweeting, “WTF!”

But most rap fans were thrilled, with many paying tribute to Shakur and others stating, “This is dope,” and, “This is unbelievable”. And one fan tweeted, “I told y’all Tupac wasn’t dead!”

Snoop and Dr. Dre’s opening Sunday night at the two 2012 Coachellas was “the best rap concert of the decade”, according to one fan.

It was somewhat of a who’s who of rap, with Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar joining them onstage, while Warren G teamed up with the hip-hop icons for a tribute to the late Nate Dogg and rap trio 213.

Shouting out, “If my homie Nate Dogg was here he’d wanna hear something like this…” Snoop performed Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None) with Warren G, as a photo slideshow of Nate Dogg flashed up on big screens behind and over the stage.

Eminem appeared to rap through I Need a Doctor immediately after the Tupac Shakur tribute and then joined his mentor Dre on Forgot About Dre.

50 Cent took to the stage with G-Unit sidekick Tony Yayo for a brief solo set, performing P.I.M.P. and In Da Club, and Wiz Khalifa joined Snoop for a rendition of their hit Young & Wild & Free.

In between the superstar turns, official headliners Snoop and Dre celebrated their 20-year partnership with a set that included Drop it Like It’s Hot, Next Episode and Gin & Juice.

The duo also performed Dre’s first solo single, Deep Cover (187), Nuthin’ But a G Thang and a brief cover of House of Pain’s Jump Around.

The rap superstars closed their 60-minute set with their classic hit Still D.R.E. and it was clear the reclusive producer/hitmaker had really enjoyed what one Twitter.com fan called “Epichella”. He left the thousands at the festival with the line, “Coachella, I wanna say thank you for all the love over the years.”

The stunning weekend festival – perhaps the best ever – also featured headlining performances from The Black Keys and Radiohead and other highlights from Florence & The Machine, Miike Snow, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, M83, The Shins, Bon Iver, A$AP Rocky, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys.

The acts will repeat their performances and festival time slots at a second Coachella next weekend.

If you’re in any way involved with hip-hop, then you’re sure to have heard the trademark “Maybach Music” female voice over at the beginning of every Rick Ross record and major MMG single (Ma-Ma-Ma-Maybach Music [sometimes it's drawn out longer]), and while we’ve never really wondered who it was behind that signature, an exceptionally hot Australian model named Jessica Gomes was busy watching her vocals become universally recognized without receiving a cent.

Here’s what she stated in a recent interview:

“Really! I need to be getting paid for these songs,” Gomes said. “[Am I getting paid?] No! [Should I?] Now I do. Because it’s hot and it’s out there. [Have I talked to Ross about the voiceover?] No. Not at all. I haven’t had a conversation with any of them about it.” (Global Grind)

Gomes, who was recently revealed as the Maybach Music Group voice, recorded the infamous notes back in ’08, and claims she recieved the opportunity through her chum, Jay-Z:

“Right, Jay-Z and Rick Ross. It was at the beginning of the ['Maybach Music'] track. It was another girl talking and then she says, ‘What is this?’ and I say ‘It’s Maybach music’ and then we both say ‘I like this Maybach music.’ And we both go ‘Sweet,’” she said. “We were just hanging out with friends in the studio and then it just happened. We got behind the mic, started talking and that was it, really. They decided to put it in their song and nothing came about. But now everyone’s using my part where I say “Maybach Music.” (Global Grind)

I have a lot of trouble believing Jessica will be receiving some cash from this. Maybe a few more gigs though. Ro-Ro-Ro-Roc Nation.

NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Lenox Hill Hospital Executive Director Frank Danza issued the following statement in response to inaccurate news media reports regarding the presence of the Carter family at the hospital:
“Lenox Hill Hospital and its staff were delighted to welcome the Carter family for the birth of their firstborn on Saturday evening, but we are troubled by the misinformation being circulated in some news media reports. The suggestion that the couple paid $1.3 million to rent an entire maternity floor is simply not true. The family is housed in an executive suite at the hospital and is being billed the standard rate for those accommodations. Our executive suites are available for any patient, including the food service and amenities provided to the Carter family.
“The family does have its own security detail on site. However, the hospital has been and continues to be in control of managing all security at the facility. We have made every effort to ensure minimal disruption to other families experiencing the births of their own children over the past three days. No security plan that we or the Carters’ security team put in place would have prevented or delayed families from gaining access to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and to date, no families have complained to the hospital about being denied access to the NICU.
“Lenox Hill Hospital takes patient privacy and safety very seriously. And while we congratulate the Carter family on the birth of their child, we value the loyalty of ALL of our patients and always strive to ensure a positive experience, knowing that the birth of a child is a wonderful moment producing memories that last a lifetime.”

T.I. on people criticizing Tiny for not taking the drug charge
“I’ma tell you, 50 Cent and anybody else, we not gonn’a have no discussion about what my ole lady should’a, would’a, couda done for anything as it pertains to me,” begins his rant. “We ain’t gonn’a do that. I’m the only one in my family that’s gonna take a lick when it pertains to the legal system. Since me, none of my other family members have seen a jail cell. Nobody. I’m the last one. The buck stops here. I feel that a person that stands behind [his woman for a criminal charge] is a coward anyway.”

I doubt she would have gotten any time.
She wasn’t gonna catch it period, ’cause I’m there. That wasn’t even a consideration. Even if she asked me to I would’ve been like, “Nah, you trippin’. “

So you didn’t feel you were more valuable to your family, employees and business partners on the street?
That’s a discussion between me and another man. Not with the mother of my children. Not with the nurturer of my household.”

Ludacris refuses to take Drake and Big Sean’s slick disses lightly. In a song off his latest mixtape, Luda schools the rap newcomers on some hip hop history, and shoots back at the two rappers who seem to be taking shots at his rapping style .

In an interview with AllHipHop.com, Drake references Luda’s “My Chick Bad” delivery. He says:

I don’t want to offend somebody…I hate that rappers picked that flow up. I wish they had left that for people that know how to use it. They go like, “It’s a parade, MACY*S!”

Big Sean discussed the war of words with MTV’s Sway, saying this:

“Don’t get it wrong I’m not trying to diss Ludacris or nothing,” Big Sean said. “He’s a great MC. But even though that that style that got so overused, there was a lot of people who did it great and there was a lot of people who didn’t do it so great. People always ask me was you mad that people took that style from you. I’m like, ‘Nah, that went and shows me how far I can go as an artist.’ I feel like I changed hip-hop. I haven’t even dropped an album yet. So that goes to show me how powerful my mind is.”

Luda responded to them both in a Badaboom, a track from his new mixtape 1.21 Gigawatts. He raps:

“Big badaboom/ luda’s in this bitch/pussy n*ggas clear the room…Counterfeit rappers say I’m stealing their flows/ but I can’t steal what you never made up B*tch/ Y’all some duplicate rap cloning n*ggas/ I manufacture you hoes put on your makeup B*tch.”

“May not like the way I used it/ but you know you ain’t invent it, boy/do your research before you make a claim so bogus that’s disrespecting pioneers in the game.”

Drake’s 2010 debut Thank Me Later was one of the most striking hip-hop coming-out parties in recent memory. The Canadian rapper’s tales of the high life were tinged with a sense of regret that perfectly fit the spare, somber tone in his music. The much-anticipated follow-up is more expansive, with producers from Just Blaze to the Neptunes to Lex Luger creating tracks that range from piano-laden R&B to Southern hip-hop, and guests like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, The Weeknd and Lil Wayne rolling through to liven things up. Drake is still the same lovably conflicted dude, and that’s part of what makes Take Care – which leaked over the weekend – compelling.

1. “Over My Dead Body”
“Shout out to Asian girls / Let the lights dim sum.” Take Care opens with a grandiose ode to fame, power and money, complete with the kind of poignant pianos and synth streaks that undercut his brags with a tinge of sadness: “I was drinking at the Palms last night / And ended up losing everything I came with,” he raps. New record, same old miserably kick-ass life.

2. “Shot For Me”
A bass drum like a heartbeat leads into a ballad complete with Eighties synths Phil Collins might croon over, as Drake pours over the wreckage of an old love: “May angels protect and heaven accept you.” When you break up with Drake, you don’t just get an ex-boyfriend – you get a benediction.

3. “Headlines”
In the context of this dark-tinted album, the straightforwardly flashy “Headlines” sounds practically joyful, even as Drake apologizes for his fame. The song’s martial beat and strobe-flash strings suggest the superstar entrance of a champion prizefighter. Of course, with Drake you worry he just might get in the ring, and sit down in the middle and cry.

4. “Crew Love”
Featuring Toronto singer The Weeknd, it’s some avant-R&B lushness: echoing snare shots, finger snaps that sound like they were recorded in a cathedral and crooned background vocals that go “take your nose off my keyboard / What you bothering me for.” It’s a tender ode to metaphorical family in the face of a world where everybody wants a little Drake.

5. “Take Care”
The Drake and Rihanna duet moment does not disappoint. Guitars scrape across the sky like fighter jets and tom-toms roll over sad house music pianos. It’s crushed out R&B heaven: “I’ve loved and I’ve lost,” she sings, and they spend the song reassuring each other that they’re worth trusting. Very sweet.

6. “Marvin’s Room”
Only Drake could take a song this dark and sleepy and make it resonate the way it has. Here, at eight epic minutes, it enters the canon of greatest drunk-dial songs of all time (up there with the Replacements’ “Answering Machine”). But even in abjection, Drake comes through with his own special savoir faire: Who else calls his ex and complains he’s been having too much empty sex this week and probably gets her sympathy?

7. “Underground Kings”
Opening with a gangsta Simon and Garfunkel reference, this pumped up track has a Lil Wayne-like flow and a liquid diamond-spoked Southern rap track from 9th Wonder; Drake tells his Horario Alger-like story of going from underground to superstar, from riches to more riches: “It’s been two years since someone asked me who I was.”

8. “We’ll Be Fine”
A relatively thugged-up track for Drake; his voice distorts as he sings about how down he is and a Canadian buddy comes in to big-up “that Uptown sh*t,” as in uptown Toronto. So, if you’re ever in Toronto and you’re looking for where the gangstas are, just tell your cabdriver, “Uptown, you Hoser!”

9. “Make Me Proud”
All of Drake’s alleged girlfriends are in the house. Now, it’s Nicki’s turn. Over taut hi-hat clicks and synthed-up guitar flares that sound like you’re hearing them through a wall of cotton candy, Drizzy celebrates a the kind of girl who’s fine with a complex mind, as Nicki Minaj comes in for a characteristically hot verse (“double-d up hos, dolly partin!”) and a searing vocal hook on the chorus.

10. “Lord Knows”
Just Blaze gives Drake a track with a sky-kissing mix of gospel choir, gauzy R&B sample and stomping beat: it’s busy and overheated and a nice break from the usual sparse, slow Drake production style. Drake rarely sounds this hyped up and Rick Ross comes in for a hilarious verse: “Villa on the water with the wonderful view / Only fat nigga in the sauna with Jews.”

11. “Cameras/Good Ones Go”
Over a minimal Lex Luger beat that’s all snakey hi hat clicks and dark low-end vroom, Drake does his best to disabuse a woman of the misconception that he’s cheating on her after she sees images of him with another woman in a magazine: “Look like we in love, but only on camera.” Some girls just can’t make the subtle distinction between image and reality like Drake can. The track fades into “Good Ones Go,” a cavernous R&B lament for the girls we lose – so it looks like the girl from “Cameras” was unconvinced by Drake’s semiotic argument.

12. “Doing It Wrong”
The much-anticipated Stevie Wonder joint. The song is a brooding track with Seventies synth hits and summery harmonica solo courtesy of the R&B legend, now in his amazing sixth decade of legend-hood, that’s a striking counterpoint to the emotional frozen-world of the song (“we live in a generation of not being in love”). Stevie doesn’t seem to sing though, so this generational meeting is a bit like two star cruisers passing in the night.

13. “The Real Her”
The track is your usual dark, distracted missive on the eternal recurrence loop of Drake’s life: another night, another limo drive around town with a beautiful girl who exclusively dates famous rappers – such as Weezy and Andre, who add freestyle color. Weezy: “I don’t want be in the blind but sometimes I Stevie Wonder about her.” Um, Weez, psst: Stevie Wonder is on the album, so maybe not so much with the blind Stevie Wonder jokes. Andre is arresting, wrapping his molasses flow around the thick groove as he finds his girl, “sad as hell listening to Adele” and totally empathizes.

14. “Look What You’ve Done”
Drake hits the piano bar for a little nostalgic soul balladry that pours out thanks for the support for his mom, his aunt and even his estranged dad. He looks back at his pre-fame days when he “was just another kid in a drop top Lexus hopin’ that I don’t get arrested.” It’s a very nice song in the fine tradition of Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You).” At the end his grandma comes on to thank him for keeping her living well in old age. Ah, Drake, sometimes it isn’t all about you, and we love you for it.

15. HYFR (Hell Yeah fu*kin Right)
Drake opens the track with a whiplash verse or two before passing the mic for a Weezy showcase: he rhymes “hold her” and “closure” and raps “a met a female dragon had a fire conversation.” Apparently, the phrase “hell yeah fu*kin’ right” is something they yell at journalists who ask questions like “how high they are?” and “do you they think the people around you are really your friend.” In their defense, those are terrible questions. I would ask Weezy about the NBA lockout and ask Drake where the best place is to buy an obscenely overpriced candelabra.

16. “Practice”
A relatively thugged up track for Drake; his voice distorts as he sings about how down he is. The song is also a tribute to New Orleans hip-hop, with a reference to “Back That Azz Up.” “Let me put something in your life,” he quietly offers. It’s one of the album’s most tender romantic moments, recalling the openhearted smuttiness of his 2010 The-Dream collabo, “Shut It Down.”

17. “The Ride”
The Weeknd are back for another luxurious, mysterious gripe about what the terrifying awesomeness of fame: from knowing strippers by their first names to fu*king up the double cheek kiss at Fashion Week to having an unmanageably large entourage of Canadian hip-hop buddies. On the chorus, Drake tries to rationalize these complaints and after 17 tracks of twisting himself in pretzels of self-examination you kind of wish he’d just lighten up and light one up and enjoy the ride.
