These Are Our Heroes?

August 24, 2010

By Lester Holmes

If I wasn’t “tagged” in the picture on Facebook, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Last weekend during a concert in Detroit, rapper Rick Ross brought to the stage Ms. Lucille Flenory, the mother of Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, better known as the incarcerated drug dealer Ross immortalized with his hit song “B.M.F”

Before I go any further, let me be clear. I have no issue with Ms.Flenory. This blog has no malice towards her. The purpose of this blog is to examine the reasons why we praise drug dealers and street thugs as if they’re Malcolm, Martin and Rosa?

True, we’re not alone in this. America loves a criminal. We’ve all seen The Godfather and Scarface. We’re intrigued with mafia tales, fast lifestyles and reaching for the American Dream by any means necessary. It turns us on.

However, while other cultures and ethnic groups within America can get away with glorifying gangsters without collateral damage to their communities, African-Americans suffer directly from this gangster hero worship phenomenon.

We have more respect for the Nino Brown’s of the world than the Steve Urkel and Dwayne Wayne’s.  We encourage our children to pick up a gun and a crack-rock instead of picking up a book and a dream. We tell our daughters to “get a man with money,” no matter how he ascertains his wealth.

To be clear, we are not talking about Assata Shakur, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Geronimo Pratt or other political prisoners. We are talking about those who seek to do our communities harm to make a buck.

Which brings me back to Rick Ross, Big Meech and the irony of performing his “tribute” in Detroit.

Just like many inner-city communities in America, Detroit has been decimated as a direct result of the drug trade. The cemeteries are filled with those who were killed either due to protecting their drug turf from competition or from their bodies falling victim to the pipe and the needle.

Of course their are honest, hard-working men and women throughout the city of Detroit, (and every other inner-city in America) but their good deeds go unnoticed because people rather save their accolades for criminals.

Men such as Big Meech and Rick Ross (I mean the real Rick Ross, not the rapping imitation)profited from the desperation and despair of their own people. They sold death in a vile. Their efforts destroyed lives, wrecked families and are encouraged our kids to become drug dealers to make it out the ghetto.

I’m sure someone in that Detroit concert crowd lost a family member to drugs. I’m sure someone in that crowd had their car window smashed or purse stolen by a drug addict seeking a quick way to get a quick fix. I’m sure someone in that crowd moved from their neighborhood because its not safe.

And I’m sure someone realized that Rick Ross’ hero and those like him are the cause of it.
